In today's highly competitive market, no one should start a business without a basic Business Plan. There are many free models available as well as numerous organizations offering advice at no or little charge. Business professionals and consultants offer more in-depth service for a fee. The following links should help get you started:
Choosing the appropriate location for your business is important whether it is retail, wholesale, service, manufacturing, etc. Most local jurisdictions have restrictions on the types of business that can operate in certain areas. Many communities have restrictions on home-based businesses. Check with the local planning office in the city you plan to do business to determine if your business type is allowed in that specific area.
Is also known as a Federal Tax Identification Number, and is used to identify a business entity. Generally, businesses need an EIN. Individual businesses with one employee may, in most instances, use their social security number.

Most local governments (city & county) require you obtain a business license if you plan to do business within their jurisdiction. You may not officially begin your business until you have registered with the local jurisdictions. Sole Proprietorships and basic Partnerships may only require a business license from your local jurisdiction. Corporations, Limited Liability Corporations and other types of corporations must be registered through the State of Tennessee's Secretary of State Office.
Most businesses outside of the home will require permits issued by state and local government to ensure compliance with specific codes and regulations. Contact the local Planning Office and the Code Enforcement Office for details.
